I got the chance to turn pages at a recital early in my freshman year at Arizona State University. As I hurried back to my dorm after class to get my long black skirt and heels, I had no idea of what was to come. I remember sitting at David Garvey’s elbow, feverishly trying to concentrate on the next turn as her voice kept beckoning me to get lost. They were both kind to me, and I was shaken, inspired, unable to sleep that night. I was living far from New York and wasn’t into opera at the time, so I’ll always be grateful to the universe for letting me hear her live, practically by accident.
