Back to home base

Where did the time in Houston go? It seems like I was posting from the first Das Rheingold rehearsals just the other day. But the dress rehearsal was last night, and I am back in Austin for a few weeks of teaching.

Houston, we have a problem – there are almost no tickets left for this run of Rheingold. If you can beg, borrow, or steal your way in, or if you’ve planned ahead and have your seats, you are in for a marvelous evening. It was an honor and an absolute pleasure to work with this remarkable cast. I miss them terribly and will be with them all in spirit on opening night in just a few days!

Meanwhile, I am back home in more than one sense. Back home in Austin, and back home with La bohème. This opera is truly home base for me. It’s one of the first operas I ever learned well, the first I ever conducted, and the one I have returned to most often. Now we are teaching our students at UT how to prepare and execute this music. As well as I know this score’s tight construction and soaring melodies, it always surprises me, always teaches me something. As does each new cast.

Alles was ist, endet. And then begins again.
