Ariadne rehearsals have begun! It is such a pleasure to be back at Glimmerglass after more than a dozen years. Even after all this time it feels familiar, and I’m overjoyed to feast my eyes on the beauty of Otsego County again. The cast was ready to get down to serious work on day one, and I look forward to these coming weeks of exploration together.
Every moment of today brought me back to the astonishing powers and inspiration of Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal. This piece, their first real collaboration, is full of information at every turn. It’s truly a play, alive, changing tempo and expression at every moment. An enormous, enlivening, gratifying challenge.
