Tonight is the final dress rehearsal for the University of Michigan’s production of Giulio Cesare in Egitto. What a joy it has been to work on this remarkable opera with the committed students here. I couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishment. It always blows me away to watch students work toward and achieve something expressive and risky and beautiful, knowing that they are doing so in the midst of theory exams, choir, band, outside jobs, etc. etc. etc.
As usual, I am in their debt, having learned as least as much from them as I may have taught in return. And we’ve all learned from one of our art’s great masters.
One more time to practice, team Handel – and then we play!
